Message from SCA Vice-Chair
Young Republican State Chairs:
A couple weeks ago, you humbled me by selecting me to fulfill the remaining 7 months of the SCA Vice-Chair position. Already Chairman Rodriguez and I have been discussing ways we believe we can help add more value to you the members of the SCA. One of the first items of business will be club building. At the April SCA board meeting in Chicago we plan on using the latter half of the meeting that day to do a seminar on how to grow clubs in our states. The two of us will also be reaching out to the state chairs starting in January in a series of listening posts to help understand your needs better.
I am honored to be serving in this position and appreciate your hearty voice of support in moving our organization forward.
Warm Regards,
Daniel L. Kinnamon

11.25.10 SCA NEWSLETTER Our First SCA Newsletter!
Dear YR State Chairmen,
Happy Thanksgiving! As we gather with our families and give thanks for all of our blessings, I am reminded of all that we have to be grateful for.
It wasn't too long ago when the so-called experts said that the Republican party was looking at extinction, and here we are at the close of 2010 celebrating the historical wins of three weeks ago. With the support from volunteers like you, the YRNF has set records with our deployments and GOTV efforts of over 300,000 voter contacts! At home in California, although we may not have seen the electoral victories that our friends in other parts of the country experienced, we still have much to be proud of. YRs in CA have come together in unity for the first time in nearly twenty years with the common goal of growing our state organization as well as the YRNF.
Like all of you, I am exhausted from the last election cycle but ready to get to work on the SCA. I am happy to bring you all the first edition of our SCA newsletter where state chairmen can share their successes and ideas on how we can strengthen our state chapters as well as the YRNF. Over the next few days, you will receive official notice for our next conference call as well as a schedule of calls for the next six moths. I encourage you all to share your ideas in what you would like to see from the SCA over the next few months and I look forward to working with all of you.
In unity,
Jenniffer Rodriguez

STATE CHAIR CORNER
Every edition we will try to highlight one of our state chairs and their efforts in their home state. This edition we turn to the Midwest- which had substantial gains in this past election cycle. Below we feature 10 Question with the leaders of our Michigan and Ohio Chapters!
SCOTT CZASAK
MICHIGAN YOUNG REPUBLICANS
-
Name:
Scott Ryan Czasak, Macomb, MI
-
What are your hobbies outside the YRNF?
Outside of politics I enjoy music, movies and art. I am also a fan of baseball and professional wrestling, divergent interests I know...
-
How long have you been on YRNF national committee?
Since 2007, served as the MI NCM first. I am also currently the Chairman of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee.
-
Best moment as Chair of the MI YRs?
Leading a group of Michigan YR's to Massachusetts and helping to elect Scott Brown and being at his victory party.
-
Most challenging part to being a state chair?
Recruiting membership in a state that loses one person or family every 12 mins because of our single state Democrat depression.
-
Signature YR activity or event from your state?
Our multitude of efforts to elect Republicans, from one chapter adopting a county commissioner, to the aforementioned trip to Massachusetts.
-
What advice would you give other state chairs looking to grow their state federations?
Trust your instincts, no one knows your states and your needs than you do: that may mean you need to be more hands on or hands off, try different kinds of events, or even evaluate the size of an executive board you need.
-
Political heroes?
Abraham Lincoln for his leadership, Russell Kirk for his ideas, Thaddeus McCotter for my job.
-
How did you manage to turn a "blue" state "red"?
As much as I'd like to take credit it was something that was beyond me or the YR's it was a reaction to 8 years of mismanagement. Michigan actually did better than the wave in the rest of the country because of that fact.
-
What do you hope to get out of your involvement from the SCA or YRNF?
I've gotten so much already it is hard to imagine what else I could get out of it. I hope to continue to meet great people from across the country, expand my political skills and continue to develop as both a YR and as a Republican.
RYAN JOHNSON
OHIO YOUNG REPUBLICANS
-
Name and State?
Ryan Johnson, Concord Township (East of Cleveland), Ohio
-
What do you do for fun outside of your involvement with the YRNF?
I enjoy being active whether it's playing basketball, golf, running or working out. I'm also a season ticket holder of my beloved Cleveland Browns and love to cook whenever I have the time. Recently, I've become more involved with the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
-
How long have you been on YRNF national committee?
I've served on the YRNF National Committee for the past four years, first as NCM and currently as State Chairman.
-
How have you find your experiences as chair of the Buckeye state?
Challenging, yet rewarding. Like most things in politics (and life), as soon as you think you have it all figured out, something reminds you otherwise.
-
Best moment as Chair of the Ohio YRs?
November 2, 2010. That night we took every statewide office, regained control of the apportionment board, took back the Ohio House, held a U.S. Senate seat, picked up five Congressional seats and I realized just how big of a part the OYR played. Our members had won the State Treasurer's office, numerous State Representative seats, ran multiple successful statewide campaigns, worked on countless others, coordinated regional victory centers, knocked on tens of thousands of doors, made even more phone calls made and I couldn't have been more proud to be associated with the organization.
-
Most challenging part to being a state chair?
Getting blamed for things you have absolutely no control of. It sucks, but it comes with the job so deal with it and move on.
-
Signature YR activity or event from your state?
Our Annual State Convention. This event brings together chapters from across the state for a weekend full of great speakers, seminars, planning and strategy sessions and, of course, socializing.
-
What advice would you give other state chairs looking to grow their state federations?
Just get out there. Membership growth occurs at the local level so attend your club's meetings, engage the officers and give them the tools they need to succeed.
-
Quote(s) that best sums you up.
"What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us."
- Henry David Thoreau
"Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion."
- Jack Kerouac
-
Who are your political heroes?
Steve Janger, founder of the Close Up Foundation. A close family friend and the man who inspired me to become involved in the political process. Also, Ronald Reagan, who I have always admired for his vision and conviction.

MONTANA YOUNG REPUBLICANS
Young Republicans around the country worked hard to get our GOP Team elected this Fall. However, in Montana, lead by their Chair Adam Gilbertson, the Young Republicans there had a banner year!
The MT YRS ran their own radio ad for a State Senate District race. The group also did five mailings on behalf of candidates and overall committed $15,000 to the past election cycle in Montana.
Great job Adam and the MT YRs!
